Meditation is the conscious process of turning our attention inward. During an ordinary day our mind is focused on what is externally happening around us. We think of how music sounds, how the sand feels beneath our feet, the way the bread in the oven smells. When we focus on what is happening around us, on the outside, we find ourselves attributing our pleasure and our pain to these external things and how they seem to make us feel. Because of this, our happiness becomes dependent upon external events, people and circumstances. Through meditation, we begin to draw our awareness inward rather than completely focusing on our external sense perceptions.
It is a common experience to let what others say and do take over our attention. Someone says something that offends us and we spend hours analyzing what they said, what they meant, what you said, what you should have said. We end up with our heart racing, teeth clenched, irritable and exhausted. We let it take us over.
However, it wasn't the person who was responsible for our state of happiness. It was the state that we let our mind get into that controlled how we were feeling. We let our minds run away like this and it takes up so much of our time and eventually our life.
Through meditation, we begin a process of learning how to focus our attention when and where we want it to go. We do not change the world or the people in it but instead change ourselves and our responses to the world and the people in it. In doing so, the world actually does become a different place. We shape our own experiences through our beliefs and emotions.
Meditation is not something that takes us to another world. Instead it more that you shift your understanding to a conscious rather than unconscious process.
There are many different methods of meditation. One does not need to subscribe to any particular religion or belief system in order to partake. You can go as far and as deeply as you choose. It is perfectly possible to maintain your own personal faith and use meditation simply as a relaxation technique. Mediation need not conflict with other belief systems but instead can be incorporated into your life as an additional gateway into higher awareness.
You may wish to start with what is known as "Mindfulness" which includes simple breathing techniques.
For those who do want to go deeper, meditation can help you to explore deeper parts of your consciousness.
I will not try to put a section on meditation on my website as there are already so many useful sits on the Internet that would enable you to browse and seek out methods tailored to your own comfort level. However, if you have any questions, I am more than happy to try to answer them.
